Various bus lines are available for excursions to the neighboring provinces.   Chiang Rai Living also offers a shuttle service to/from the airport and to places of interest etc. in the area.  

You can drive individually and just as comfortably on the very well-developed roads of Bangkok after Chiang Rai drive. It takes about 10 hours. In 3-4 hours is Chiang Mai reached,  Lampang in 3 hours, Nakhon Sawan in 7 or Khon Kaen in 11 hours. Most roads allow 90 km/h and are often 4 lanes. At the borders too  Myanmar or Laos you are already after 1-2 hours.             

A scooter or moped is always a good idea for short distances. For those who like sports and like to ride a bike, the mountainous sections of the region are certainly a pleasure.
